The Ministry of Justice is responsible for enhancing the quality of Justice in the community by ensuring an effective and accessible system of Courts and independent Electoral Commission. The Ministry is also responsible for the provision of policy advice on all Justice sector matters including relevant legislative issues to the Prime Minister and Cabinet. It also provides support and administrative services to the Courts (Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, Land Court, Magistrates Court).

Our Staff

The Minister of Justice is a political appointment and the incumbent is the Hon. Sione Vuna Fa’otusia. As head of the Ministry, the Minister is responsible to Government at the Cabinet and the Legislative Assembly of Tonga.

Minister of Justice, Hon. Sione Vuna Fa’otusia

vunaHon. Fa’otusia holds a Bachelor in Laws (LLB) degree from the University of New South Wales, a Master degree from London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

He has extensive experience in the public and private sectors working for the Government of Tonga in various senior positions with the most senior being that of Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Justice from 1996 to 1998. He practiced law in the private sector for number of years before running for Parliament in 2014.

After being elected into Parliament, he was appointed by the Prime Minister and His Majesty as Minister of Justice in January 2015.

The Executive Management of the Ministry is headed by the Chief Executive Officer. In July 2016, the Ministry had 113 staff members employed by the Ministry.
